Customs Duty Relief and VAT Exemption
Council Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009 of 16-11 (the “Reliefs Regulation”) sets out the situations in which it is possible to obtain relief (exemption) from customs duties. One of these circumstances is the transfer of residence, in which, by meeting all the conditions and having all the required documentation, in addition to the customs duty relief, VAT exemption may also be obtained (Decree-Law 31/89 of 25-01) and, in the case of vehicles, ISV exemption (article 58 of the ISV Code).
